SS-Alterna features Gray-Banded Kingsnakes which are native to rocky habitats in the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico, New Mexico, and Texas. This species, Lampropeltis alterna, makes an excellent sub set subject because of their tendency to be uniquely patterned and colored at the various isolated localities where they can be found. No two Gray-Banded Kingsnakes are exactly alike and neither are two cards in this series.

This sub set, which is randomly inserted into base sets, can be quickly recognized by its dark silver border, orange stripe, and foil star. Although captive breeding is common with this species, each snake pictured on the card front represents a unique genetic locality line. The locality where each snake originated from is listed in large gray letters on the face of each card. This gives collector's a first hand view of how a Gray-Banded Kingsnake from Loma Alta Texas, for example, looks compared to its con-specific brother in the Davis Mountains.
